Urgent - Ukraine facing winter power collapse
[your address]
Dear [name of your MP]
I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to you as your constituent to urge you to raise, as a matter of urgency, the escalating electricity emergency in Ukraine and to press the Government for additional support.
Ukraine is currently experiencing an acute winter energy emergency during an extreme cold spell. Ongoing Russian attacks on power generation and transmission infrastructure have left the electricity system operating far below demand, forcing widespread blackouts at a time when temperatures are well below freezing. For millions of civilians, electricity is not a matter of convenience but of survival. It is essential for heating, water supply, hospitals, care homes, communications, and basic safety.
Recent reporting confirms that the Ukrainian government has been forced to accelerate emergency electricity imports and the procurement of critical power equipment in response to the collapse in available capacity. This is a fast-moving crisis, unfolding in the depths of winter, with very limited margin for delay. Every additional outage increases the risk to the Ukrainian civilian population - already living under extraordinary strain.
I welcome the UK Government’s £20 million commitment to support Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which reflects the UK’s continued leadership and solidarity. However, the severity of the current cold spell and the scale of damage to the grid strongly suggest that further, immediate assistance is required if lives are to be protected in the coming weeks.
I would be grateful if you could write to UK Government Ministers:
1. Press the Foreign Secretary and relevant ministers to urgently assess whether additional emergency funding can be released on top of the £20 million already announced.
2. Ask what steps the UK is taking to accelerate the delivery of critical electricity and heating equipment, including transformers, mobile substations, generators and grid-repair materials, during this winter period.
3. Raise the issue in Parliament, through an Oral or Written Question or debate, to seek clarity on how the Government is responding to this emergency and coordinating with allies to keep civilians warm, safe and supplied with power.
This is a humanitarian emergency unfolding in real time. The coming weeks will be decisive, and timely support could prevent immense suffering. I hope you will be able to raise this urgently with ministers.
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response.
Best wishes,
[your name]
