Ukraine's Freedom - and Europe's Security - Are Not Negotiable
[your address]
Dear [name of your MP]
This war is bigger than Ukraine. It is a test of whether Britain and its allies are willing to defend the rules that keep peace in Europe: that borders matter, promises must be kept, and aggression cannot be rewarded.
Ukraine’s eastern border with Russia is more than 1,200 kilometres long. To defend it credibly requires forces on a scale far greater than those once deployed in Bosnia and Kosovo. A token presence of 5,000 or 10,000 would not deter Russia; even the Bosnia/Kosovo model would be inadequate. As General Sir Richard Barrons has said, deterrence means not just the capability to fight, but also the will to fight if all else fails. The Government must be honest with itself - and with the public - about the much greater scale of commitment required if Britain is to stand behind its promises.
Russia has already broken every commitment it made to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty. To reward its aggression with land would legitimise invasion, undermine international law, and invite more wars. Wherever Russia occupies, atrocities follow: mass graves, torture, executions. Allowing Moscow to keep what it has stolen condemns more Ukrainians to the same fate.
That is why Russia must be compelled not only to withdraw its forces, but also to take responsibility for the destruction it has caused. Every abducted Ukrainian child must be returned. And beyond restoring territory and lives, there must be justice - accountability for the crimes committed, and reparations for the suffering inflicted. Without justice, peace will not be durable.
I therefore ask you to call on the Government to commit to a long-term, credible security guarantee for Ukraine, backed by the scale of forces and resources needed to deter Russia and defend international law. Britain must make clear that Ukraine’s freedom - and Europe’s security - are not negotiable.
I would be grateful if you could:
• Raise the issue of Ukrainian security guarantees urgently in Parliament and with Ministers, and call for a credible, long-term commitment backed by real military capability.
• Demand that Russia withdraws its forces and pays for the destruction it has caused in Ukraine.
• Press for justice for Ukrainians, ensuring those responsible for war crimes face consequences, and secure the return of abducted Ukrainian children.
Yours sincerely,
[your name]
