I am writing as your constituent following Andy Burnham’s appointment as Prime Minister and Russia’s devastating attack on Ukraine on 19th July 2026.

Russia launched 41 missiles and 125 drones across Ukraine, directing most of the missiles towards Kyiv. At least one person was killed and 16 were injured in Kyiv and the surrounding region, with further casualties elsewhere. Homes and offices were damaged, as was the entrance to Lukianivska metro station - a vital air-raid shelter for civilians.

Ukraine did not start this war. Russia began its aggression in 2014 and escalated it into a full-scale invasion in February 2022. Ukraine cannot achieve peace simply by ceasing to defend itself: occupation is not peace.

The attack also demonstrated that air defence saves lives. Ukraine intercepted 18 missiles and 108 drones, but too many weapons still reached their targets. Ukraine urgently needs more Patriot systems and interceptors, radar equipment, spare parts and trained crews.

The change of Prime Minister must not weaken Britain’s commitment. I ask you to urge Prime Minister Burnham and the Government to:

  • reaffirm at least £3 billion in annual military assistance until 2030–31 and for as long as necessary;
  • accelerate the delivery and production of air-defence missiles, drones and other essential equipment;
  • publish clear delivery timetables so that support is measured by what reaches Ukraine;
  • continue Operation Interflex and uphold the UK–Ukraine One Hundred Year Partnership;
  • strengthen sanctions against Russia’s military supply chains, financial intermediaries and shadow fleet;
  • pursue a lawful mechanism for using immobilised Russian state assets to support Ukraine; and
  • support the investigation and prosecution of alleged war crimes.

Please write to the Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary and Defence Secretary, and raise these matters in Parliament.

Supporting Ukraine is essential to protecting Britain and Europe. The new Prime Minister should make clear that a change of leader does not mean a weakening of British resolve.
