I am contacting you to request urgent action in relation to the unfolding crisis in Oleshky, Ukraine.

The town of Oleshky, in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine’s Kherson Oblast, is under a humanitarian blockade, with no food deliveries since late May. Residents are going hungry, while Russian forces are preventing people from leaving. Residents survived the summer on vegetables from their own gardens, but with the growing season now ending, they face the threat of hunger and starvation.

Russian soldiers currently do not allow vehicles carrying food to enter and turn residents back at checkpoints. The German newspaper Bild has also reported Russian soldiers telling residents attempting to leave to “Go back and die there”. The current evidence strongly suggests Russia is committing War Crimes.

Ukrainian authorities and international organisations are currently trying to negotiate an evacuation of the town, but according to Ukraine’s National Resistance Center, Russian forces are using the humanitarian crisis for propaganda purposes, blaming Ukrainians for blocking the exits. Local residents, however, report constant Russian drone attacks and mined areas, making evacuation and access to basic resources extremely dangerous and difficult.

Between 2,000 and 4,000 people remain in Oleshky, and they are facing a serious risk of death and starvation.

The actions of the Russian army are morally abhorrent and constitute War Crimes. I urge you to raise this unfolding humanitarian disaster in Parliament and put pressure on the UK Government to do everything within its power to secure safe humanitarian access and the evacuation of civilians from Oleshky.
